Dimensions of Comfort

The wooden 1 :1 model was made at the Dimensions of Comfort workshop, which marks the 10th anniversary of Tina Rugelj Studio. The workshop was a joint cooperation of the Studio, Faculty of Architecture of Ljubljana, and the Museum of Architecture and Design. Eleven students under the mentorship of Tina Rugelj and Anja Planišček designed a wooden model that allows visitors to experience the measurements and proportions between furniture elements in the most ordinary of living spaces – the staircase, kitchen and toilet. The model offers possible answers to the questions which we raised at the beginning of the workshop and which architects and designers have to deal with every day: How do you determine the right height of the kitchen counter, how high should you hang the upper cabinets, what distance between the counter and the kitchen island allows for comfortable seating and use of space? What’s a comfortable step height and how high should the stair railing be? What should the handrail be like? How wide should the toilet room be?
The model as a test space poses the question of living comfort directly, right between the space, its dimensions and the body. This way it stimulates further considerations of the importance of a good interior both in those who design it and its users.
The model accompanies the exhibition The World Inside, Designing Modern Interiors, 1930–Today, which takes place at the Museum until 28 November.
