  The workshop is part of MADE IN platform,  a research, design and heritage platform that proposes new collaborative practices and knowledge exchange between the traditional craftspeople and contemporary designers. Made in partners: Museum of Architecture and Design – MAO (Ljubljana, Slovenia) (coordinator), Center Rog (Ljubljana, Slovenia), City Museum Zenica – MGZ (Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina), Drugo more (Rijeka, Croatia), Museum of Decorative Arts, part of the State Art Collections of Dresden – SKD (Dresden, Germany), Museum of Arts and Crafts – MUO (Zagreb, Croatia), Oaza (Zagreb, Croatia), Creative Hub Nova Iskra (Belgrade, Serbia), Passa ao Futuro – PAF (Lisbon, Portugal), and University of Applied Sciences Zwickau – WHZ (Schneeberg, Germany).   ABOUT THE MENTORS   Flora Lechner (Vienna, 1994) is a designer based in the Netherlands. In her work she takes an interdisciplinary approach, combining design, moving images, and sculpture. She likes to see her works conceived as small stages or potential arenas for action, playing with the idea of activation and ghostly stagnancy. She graduated in 2018 from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and in 2020 with a Masters at the Design Academy Eindhoven. Since then she has worked as an independent designer on various projects and takes part in exhibitions around Europe.   Žan Kobal (Maribor, 1993) is a designer, researcher, and writer based in Ljubljana. After graduating Cum Laude in Industrial Design from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design Ljubljana, he continued his studies at Design Academy Eindhoven, obtaining a Master’s degree Cum Laude in Contextual Design there. Approaching design as an investigative medium, his work often crosses the traditional boundaries of design by delving into film and installation to frame objects as narration devices, exploring and revealing the way materials, craft, and discourse co-create reality.   More information:  https://center-rog.si/program/made-in-delavnica-po-sledeh-tipografij/   https://center-rog.si/en/programme/made-in-workshop-tracing-topographies/   https://madein-platform.com/collaboration/unfolding-kropas-nail-production-between-utility-and-cultural-impact/" ["post_title"]=> string(39) "MADE IN Workshop: TRACING TOPOGRAPHIES" ["post_excerpt"]=> string(0) "" ["post_status"]=> string(7) "publish" ["comment_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["ping_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["post_password"]=> string(0) "" ["post_name"]=> string(37) "made-in-workshop-tracing-topographies" ["to_ping"]=> string(0) "" ["pinged"]=> string(0) "" ["post_modified"]=> string(19) "2024-09-20 14:20:26" ["post_modified_gmt"]=> string(19) "2024-09-20 12:20:26" ["post_content_filtered"]=> string(0) "" ["post_parent"]=> int(0) ["guid"]=> string(44) "https://mao.si/?post_type=event&p=29726" ["menu_order"]=> int(0) ["post_type"]=> string(5) "event" ["post_mime_type"]=> string(0) "" ["comment_count"]=> string(1) "0" ["filter"]=> string(3) "raw" }

MAO park

*In case of bad weather, the event will be held in MAO.

Five projects that form the exhibition in MAO park are the outcomes of collaboration between different organisations in the Fužine neighbourhood where MAO is located and students from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design and the Faculty of Arts. They tackled community challenges using design methods, approaches and tools. The exhibition presents the prototypes of social innovations that have the potential for realization.

  By placing the scene of the event in the park, which connects the public space between the museum and the neighbourhood, we want to enable accessibility, to foster the inclusion of vulnerable groups and also attract those visitors who would not otherwise visit Fužine's institutions. We are opening up MAO park as a space for community events that are shaped on intergenerational collaboration, knowledge-sharing within the community, public participation, and interaction between Fužine institutions. Through gatherings, events and workshops, we test the scope and effects of joint action, and we offer the presented social innovations a place to test them in reality.   PROJECT PARTNERS      " ["post_title"]=> string(33) "The Museum in Community 2 Opening" ["post_excerpt"]=> string(0) "" ["post_status"]=> string(7) "publish" ["comment_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["ping_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["post_password"]=> string(0) "" ["post_name"]=> string(33) "the-museum-in-community-2-opening" ["to_ping"]=> string(0) "" ["pinged"]=> string(0) "" ["post_modified"]=> string(19) "2024-05-13 14:25:33" ["post_modified_gmt"]=> string(19) "2024-05-13 14:25:33" ["post_content_filtered"]=> string(0) "" ["post_parent"]=> int(0) ["guid"]=> string(44) "https://mao.si/?post_type=event&p=29028" ["menu_order"]=> int(0) ["post_type"]=> string(5) "event" ["post_mime_type"]=> string(0) "" ["comment_count"]=> string(1) "0" ["filter"]=> string(3) "raw" }

This collaborative research project between Trajna’s eco-social designers and multispecies urbanist Debra Solomon aims to delineate a green corridor, a connective pathway facilitating wildlife migration throughout the city. Commencing at Krater’s feral ecosystem and finishing at one of the city's urban forests, eight exploratory walks running from dawn till dusk are planned together with the participation of transdisciplinary experts—biologists, ecologists, city planners, and landscape architects—to engage in diverse spatial readings, ranging from species dynamics to urban planning and administration. The walking practice employs Solomon’s Radical Observation methodology, which embraces the articulation of a diverse array of site readings and fosters ecosystem stewardship amongst groups with diverse ontologies. Meandering through neighborhoods, streets, and forgotten corners, the urban expedition will provide an opportunity to take note of and document the missing connections between human and non-human urban life. It will help grow our understanding of the best ways to foster the cultivation of a robust ecological network of urban greens that sustains biodiversity on the ground, avoiding simplistic solutions such as tree planting or the implementation of green roofs.   The Biodiversity Walks are a form of bottom-up diplomacy, an advocacy approach of the Krater collective rooted in Anna Tsing’s concept of slow disturbance. Through convivial events and settings, such as walking tours or tea ceremonies, creative practitioners, decision-makers and experts from various fields are invited to cross-pollinate their knowledge and to think together how best to co-design cities that prioritize multispecies justice and well-being.   About Debra Solomon   Debra Solomon (NL) is an artist and infrastructure activist with over 25 years of experience in public space. Her work merges art, infrastructure activism, and social sciences, focusing on biodiversity, climate crisis, and the multispecies right to the city and subsequent right to the urban metabolism. In 2019, Solomon coined the term multispecies urbanism and showcased the concept in the Dutch Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennial. Currently pursuing a PhD in Urban Planning at the University of Amsterdam, Solomon is also the founder of Urbaniahoeve – Social Design Lab for Urban Agriculture. Since 2010, Urbaniahoeve has been involved in critical spatial practices centered on interspecies care relations and biodiversity production. Urbaniahoeve’s current project is the 56-hectare Amsterdam Zuidoost Urban Food Forest, (called VBAZO) in Amsterdam Zuidoost. VBAZO is produced by the Urbaniahoeve collective (Debra Solomon and Renate Nollen) with local human and more-than-human communities.   About Trajna   Trajna, founded by Gaja Mežnarić Osole and Andrej Koruza, is a cultural association dedicated to cultivating and grounding innovative cultural strategies that encourage literacy in biodiversity and action among creative communities, decision-makers, and cultural and educational institutions. The organization has pioneered strategies for managing invasive species, engaging the City of Ljubljana in creating new circular economies and pioneering the Notweed paper brand, which utilizes cellulose from invasive plants for paper production. In 2020, Trajna initiated the Creative Laboratory Krater to care for and repair an 18.000 m2 pioneering ecosystem that emerged out of a former construction site and facilitates (trans)local collaborations for eco-social practitioners. Within Krater, Trajna focuses on projects that intertwine regenerative material cultures, spatial and cultural politics, and pedagogical work, collaborating with the wider Krater collective, which includes architect Danica Sretenović, microbiologist Primož Turnšek, ecologist Sebastjan Kovač, designer Rok Oblak, and the multispecies community on the site. Krater was a finalist at the New European Bauhaus Prizes in 2022 and received the prestigious Plečnik Award for architecture in 2023.   About the Crafting Biodiversity project   Crafting Biodiversity is a research project aimed at positioning craft as a reparatory land practice. Inspired by ecological corridors, the project focuses on designing techniques, tools, communication strategies, and spatial interventions to reduce land fragmentation and enhance the connectivity of urban biodiversity while advocating for the rights of all species to a healthy environment.   The project is part of the MADE IN Platform for Contemporary Craft and Design commissioned by the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana and Center Rog.   Partners of the Project: MAO (Ljubljana, Slovenija), Center Rog (Ljubljana, Slovenija), Muzej grada Zenice – MGZ (Zenica, Bosna in Hercegovina), Drugo more (Reka, Hrvaška), Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden – SKD (Dresden, Nemčija), Muzej za umjetnost i obrt – MUO (Zagreb, Hrvaška), Oaza (Zagreb, Hrvaška), Kreativni hab Nova Iskra (Beograd, Srbija), Passa ao Futuro – PAF (Lizbona, Portugalska) ter Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau – WHZ (Schneeberg, Nemčija). Built on commission from the Khisl family in mid-16th century, Fužine Castle is the only remaining renaissance castle in Ljubljana. At the time of its construction it served as a proof of wealth, reputation and political powers of its first owners.

The castle changed hands already at the end of the century and then several times over the subsequent periods, which was all reflected in its building structure. An important addition was the hydroelectric power plant which was built in 1897 to serve the Vevče paper mill. Still operative today, the power plant is a unique example of technical history. In 1984, Fužine Castle was declared a cultural monument, and has been dedicated to museum activities and managed by the Museum of Architecture and Design since 1990. The castle is located in the Fužine area which received its name after the ironworks (Slovene: fužine) that were once operative on the river Ljubljanica.   The castle tour for english speakers will be given on last Saturday of every month at 11. a.m. by our associate Katarina Metelko. We put on display Lego creations erected by architecture students who explored the spatial concepts of Plečnik's Ljubljana during the seminar and workshops.   The bricks with their modular nature were a challenge, in the first place because these “building materials” came in a limited range of colours, shapes and sizes. The basic bricks served as a starting point for creating occasionally very intricate and detailed structures of Plečnik's architecture. Our aim was to go beyond a simple re-creation of buildings in the form of miniature replicas, so we used the bricks to recreate carefully abstracted architectural designs and details, which we rasterized during the assembly process. This required proper understanding of scale, volume, symmetry, basic patterns, and geometry. Our templates were scanned original architectural designs kept by MAO and the Plečnik Collection; they served as the basis that helped us adapt the scale to the size of details, architectural elements and, last but not least, the size of the brick used. By testing various brick combinations and exploring the materials and colours, the emerging shapes began to tell the stories of different spaces and their images, both at the scale of buildings and the city.   We saw the beautiful cultural avenue of Vegova Street come to life before our very eyes, demonstrating how various scales used in spatial design can result in diverse, open-content programmes. The National and University Library is identified by the column motif and the window of the grand reading room. Different materials are used so as to convey a clear and readable story. The colours of the stone and brick shine through the belfry of the Church of St. Michael on the Marshes, while the whiteness and a forest of columns lead the eye to the Garden of All Saints, the monumental gateway to the Žale cemetery. The intricate construction of the Three Bridges in the centre of Ljubljana invites us to rethink the historic context that shapes the most vibrant public space in the city centre today. The collection of models of Plečnik's architecture is completed with a detail of the Cathedral of Freedom. The mystical nature of this unrealised project solicits debate on national symbols, leaving us in the domain of the utopian. So what does Plečnik have in common with Lego bricks? The creative force that pushes the boundaries of what is possible. The exhibition has been such a success that we decided to put it on show again, this time to a different space, and with an addition – the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, which Plečnik designed in Belgrade.   Mentors: Prof. Alenka Fikfak, PhD; Asst. With limited means, Plečnik reinterpreted the remains of the past and combined them into new, comprehensive units, gradually building the Slovenian capital into what we recognise today as the possibility of a different, more sustainable, and humane city.   Join us for a guided tour with Ana Kreč (SVET VMES), designer of the exhibition and graphic designers Anja Delbello and Aljaž Vesel (AA).    While parents enjoy a guided tour of our current exhibition, their offspring learn about architecture through play and innovative creative workshops. Design for Socialist Spaces is a collaborative exhibition project that looks at the role and influence of design in the countries of the former Eastern Bloc and former Yugoslavia between the 1950s and the 1980s. An innovative network of curators and institutions has come together to open up new and surprising insights into the complex facets of the design landscape of a region that remains unknown to the broader (and in particular Western) public. With their extensive research work, the forces behind Retrotopia are making a decisive contribution to a long-overdue re-evaluation of the global and decolonial history of design.   Curators The project is curated and directed by Claudia Banz, curator for design at the Kunstgewerbemuseum, in collaboration with co-curators Polina Baitsym, Alex Bykov, Melinda Farkasdy, Judith Horváth, Helena Huber-Doudová, Silke Ihden-Rothkirch, Karolina Jakaitė, Viera Kleinová, Rostislav Koryčánek, Mari Laanemets, Kai Lobjakas, Florentine Nadolni, Anna Maga, Kaja Muszyńska, Cvetka Požar, Klára Prešnajderová, Alyona Sokolnikova, and Koraljka Vlajo.   The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Verlag Kettler.   The exhibition is supported by the Board of Trustees of the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz.   More >> " ["post_title"]=> string(59) "Exhibition Opening: Retrotopia. Already a famous architect with an international career he took a position as professor at the newly founded university, and together with his students and supporters embarked on building a unique architectural, artistic, and ethical world, one that over the decades evolved into a one-of-a-kind architectural phenomenon. Looking at some of the approaches that the architect used in his work and discussing the complex relationship between the teacher and his students the exhibition at the Museum of Architecture and Design reflects on Plečnik’s extensive legacy and on certain topics that have not yet received much attention. With limited means, Plečnik reinterpreted the remains of the past and combined them into new, comprehensive units, gradually building the Slovenian capital into what we recognise today as the possibility of a different, more sustainable, and humane city.   Join us for a guided tour with Bogo Zupančič, curator of the exhibition and director of MAO.    While parents enjoy a guided tour of our current exhibition, their offspring learn about architecture through play and innovative creative workshops.
