Ecological Perspectives in the MAO Collection, 1930–1979 in the Museum of architecture and design (MAO) by its director Maja Vardjan. The exhibition explores modernistic architecture and design’s relationship to nature and their approach to ecological thinking.   Alongside the current exhibition the director will present the museum’s involvement with the local communities, including projects like Museum in Community, and other transdisciplinary sustainable practices, promoting a diverse range of events and workshops that encourage intergenerational collaboration between individuals and institutions.   In the same participatory manner the tour will be followed by the picnic with What Could Should Curating Do (WCSCD), educational program which serves as a testing ground for creating a collective learning site and a space to think about how to institute differently. Their collaborative approach has led to forming bonds with the Robida collective, who will join the discussion and present their unique way of operating. Jointly they will present the new WCSCD’s publication created in collaboration with Archive Books and Sok Cooperative, as well as the recent Robida magazine, centered around the orchard as a landscape and fruit trees as powerful metaphors and living archives of stories and memories.   The gathering will be activated through the presence of WCSCD program participants, curators, Sara Kecman, Giulia Gaibisso, Irene Coscarella and Marie Tatjana Niederleithinger, artist based in Novi Sad (Sok Cooperative member) Nemanja Milenković, Robida Collective, and curator and WCSCD founder Biljana Cirić.   If you would like to join the tour, please apply at hello@ljubljanaartweekend.com.   *There will be free transportation from Tivoli Park to Fužine, however visitors are welcome to join the programme directly at the Museum of architecture and design (MAO).     " ["post_title"]=> string(49) "Off the Map: Picnic in Nove Fužine Neighbourhood" ["post_excerpt"]=> string(0) "" ["post_status"]=> string(7) "publish" ["comment_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["ping_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["post_password"]=> string(0) "" ["post_name"]=> string(28) "off-the-map-piknik-v-fuzinah" ["to_ping"]=> string(0) "" ["pinged"]=> string(0) "" ["post_modified"]=> string(19) "2026-05-13 15:50:20" ["post_modified_gmt"]=> string(19) "2026-05-13 13:50:20" ["post_content_filtered"]=> string(0) "" ["post_parent"]=> int(0) ["guid"]=> string(52) "https://mao.si/dogodek/off-the-map-piknik-v-fuzinah/" ["menu_order"]=> int(0) ["post_type"]=> string(5) "event" ["post_mime_type"]=> string(0) "" ["comment_count"]=> string(1) "0" ["filter"]=> string(3) "raw" }

The event explores how modernist design, architecture, and spatial practices have shaped evolving conceptions of nature, ecology, and the environment. It brings together researchers, curators, architects, and designers to examine the intersections of modernist thought, environmental history, material cultures, vernacular knowledge, and contemporary ecological issues.   Situated at the intersection of heritage, culture, and society, the symposium will address pressing contemporary issues from a variety of perspectives. It will not treat nature as a passive backdrop to human activity but will understand it as an active condition of architecture, design, and everyday life. In this sense, the Bauhaus Ecologies project will position itself within a broader historical arc: from modernist experiments in living, building, and production to contemporary debates on sustainability, coexistence, and environmental responsibility.   Is Nature Modern? invites a critical re-reading of modernity’s ecological legacies and asks how historical approaches to environmental thinking in architecture and design might be reconsidered today. At a time when the climate crisis demands new forms of attention and action, the symposium asks what can be learned from earlier experiments, materials, practices, and forms of knowledge, and how these lessons might help move beyond narratives of appropriation, control, and extraction toward more situated, reciprocal, and responsible ways of being in the world.   PROGRAMME   09:30–10:00 REGISTRATION AND COFFEE   10:00–10:05 WELCOME

At the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO), we believe that architecture and design are universal languages that help us understand one another and the space we share.   We invite you to spend two days in the embrace of Fužine Castle, where we have prepared a special program:   FREE ADMISSION On Sunday, May 17, and Monday, May 18, the museum doors are wide open to all visitors. Take this opportunity for a free tour of all our exhibitions.   GUIDED TOURS: IS NATURE MODERN? Don't miss the guided tours of the exhibition Is Nature Modern?, which will take place:
  • Sunday, May 17, at 11:00
  • Monday, May 18, at 11:00
The guided tours will be held in Slovenian.   The exhibition explores the relationship with nature and approaches to ecological thinking in modernist architecture and design. Its starting point is the MAO collection, featuring a rich array of projects, objects, and documentation from the fields of 20th-century architecture, design, and photography.   EXHIBITION IN FOCUS: THE PATH ALONG THE WIRE. THE FIRST STEP As part of this year’s theme of connection, we are placing special emphasis on the exhibition The Path Along the Wire. The First Step. Through an architectural and historical framework, the exhibition addresses questions of borders and divisions, while highlighting the symbolism of connection represented today by Ljubljana's green arterial path.   The exhibition focuses on the first stage of the path designed by architect Vlasto Kopač—the project of marking and staking out the route. After the first Partisan march in 1957 revealed that the trail following the wire was unkempt and difficult to track, Kopač defined and staked its course. According to his plans, 102 pillars—octagonal stones with the wire engraved—were placed near bunkers, while monuments with sculptural reliefs were erected at crossing points to serve as landmarks. Much like a mountain trail, the route gained a recognizable, visible, and easily traceable direction through its trodden path and spatial markers. However, the path is not just a monument; it is a space that enables a ritual of commemoration through walking. At the same time, it serves as a recreational area, a city park, and sports infrastructure.   See you at MAO!" The destruction of entire neighbourhoods, agricultural landscapes, public infrastructure and heritage is threatening to erase their communities, historical memory and centuries-old traditions.   The international public has seen increasingly heated debates emerging regarding the future and reconstruction of Gaza, including ideas of turning Gaza into a tourist backdrop or a luxury resort. Such proposals disregard the needs and rights of the local population and undermine the chances for a sustainable and just reconstruction rooted in the practices and collective efforts of the local communities.   In collaboration with Gibanje za pravice Palestincev (Movement for the Rights of Palestinians) and the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska, the Museum of Architecture is going to host a conversation with Palestinian-British architect Antoine Raffoul. Our focus will be on the future of Gaza, the role of space, architecture and heritage during and after the war, the role of international institutions and the need for their more active engagement in the protection and reconstruction of Gaza. Raffoul insists that any reconstruction process should bear in mind the local community and its understanding of space and history, as well as its future aspirations.   Our point of departure will be Raffoul’s vision for the reconstruction of Gaza, inspired by the understanding of Palestine as a space for everyone wishing to live in peace and his decades-long efforts for the reconstruction of Lifta, a village situated at the western entrance to Jerusalem. Still facing demolition, Lifta was added to the UNESCO tentative list in 2015, owing also to the efforts of Israeli architectural organisations, and included on the World Monuments Fund’s 2018 World Monuments Watch List three years later. The event features screening of Antoine Raffoul’s short animated film portrait of pre-1948 Lifta, which uses modern technologies to visualize life in the village as it could be.   The conversation aims to open up space for a broader discussion on the ways in which the rebuilding of Gaza can unfold not as just a technical matter, but a process that integrates social, cultural and historic dimensions of the space.   The conversation will be in English, and will be moderated by Dr. Neža Čebron Lipovec, Asst. Prof. at the Faculty of Humanities, UP.   The event is part of the Free Palestine programme, a series of events organized by Movement for the Rights of Palestinians and Divja Misel institute and partners to mark the anniversary of the Nakba. It is open to everyone interested in learning more and participating in the discussion.    ---

Antoine Raffoul is a Palestinian British architect, born in 1941 in Nazareth, Palestine. In 1948, he was expelled together with ten members of his family from their home in Haifa, Palestine, by Zionist underground forces. The family then temporarily settled in Lebanon, from where they were never able to return, as the borders were soon closed. Their home in Haifa was demolished in the early 1970s.

He received his architectural degree from the University of Illinois, USA (1968), after which he began his career in New York City at Victor Gruen Associates under the auspices of the then young Cesar Pelli. In 1971, he moved to London, where he worked at Ahrends, Burton and Koralek, and later established his own private architectural practice, which he ran for more than 28 years.

During this time, he launched a campaign against the “architecture of erasure” in Palestine and called for the expulsion, from their professional institutions, of architects involved in the design and construction of illegal Jewish settlements in Historic Palestine in violation of International Law. He is a Chartered Member of The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), London, and a member of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites), CIAV (International Committee on Vernacular Architecture), and a Fellow of The Royal Geographical Society (RGS), London.

In his work, he combines architecture, the study of vernacular traditions, and political engagement. He focuses in particular on issues of cultural heritage, the Right of Return, and the so-called “architecture of erasure” in Palestine.

In 2007, he initiated efforts to preserve the deserted Palestinian village of Lifta, west of Jerusalem, which was later placed on UNESCO’s Tentative List and on the World Monuments Fund List. He is also the Founder of the platform “1948 Lest We Forget” and co-founder of the international “Architectural Competition for the Rebuilding of Destroyed Palestinian Villages.”

He is actively involved in current initiatives for the rebuilding of Gaza, advocating approaches based on the inclusion of local communities and principles of spatial justice. He lectures and publishes in the fields of architecture, politics, and cultural heritage, and is currently preparing a book about his travels through Andalucia, Morocco, and the Algerian Sahara.

It has created a speculative biodiversity corridor between Krater and the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) in Ljubljana, challenging the way ecological connectivity is imagined, governed and enacted in the urban realm. Biodiversity-rich plots from feral ecologies facing erasure by urban development have been transplanted into public greenspaces, forming experimental biodiversity parcels totalling 30,000 m². Enclosed and reclassified as cultural public space, these zones activate multispecies stewardship through phased mowing, and interrupt normative patterns of urban land management.   Programme 16:30 – 17:00 Presentation: The Crafting Biodiversity project for the Future Legacies exhibition at MAO 17:00 – 18:00 Roundtable with key stakeholders: experts, authors, decision-makers and members of the local community will discuss the insights gained during the research 18:00 – 18:30 Introduction to phased mowing by Debra Solomon, including a viewing of the rhizotron 18:30 – 19:00 Ceremonial handover of the biodiversity parcels

The event will be held in English.

The aim of the symposium is exploring perspectives beyond understanding within and highlighting new opportunities and dimensions that emerge by viewpoints from outside.   The phrase “not being able to see the trees for the forest” aptly describes the research and discourse surrounding Jože Plečnik’s work. Since the 1990s, the predominant narratives have largely been shaped by a select group of Slovenian architects, historians, and thinkers. While their insights are undeniably significant, this inward focus raises critical questions about opacity in the discourse. Some perspectives may have obscured other important aspects of Plečnik’s contributions, rendering them invisible in the larger context of architectural history. This calls for a more nuanced exploration of his work to uncover the layers that may have been overlooked.   Seeking to build upon last year’s symposium and student works,  where we encouraged a re-assessment of Plečnik’s work within a contemporary context, this year we will actively look beyond, departing from positions situated outside the borders of Slovenia. Through speaker's presentations we will look for wider impact of Plečnik’s work and we will explore its broader resonance and relevance from the perspectives of architects and researchers based, active and connected outside Slovenia, all sharing a profound engagement with his work.   Simultaneously, we are interested in expanding the conversation across geographical constraints; inviting a wider participation and encouraging cross-generational, interdisciplinary and inclusive discussions. Building upon the main topics that AA Nanotourism 2024 opened up, the speakers will reflect on the relevance of Plečnik’s work beyond Slovenia – today, in the past and in the future – and expand on the ways their respective research and practices have been informed by the legacy of Plečnik.   What has remained obscured by looking at Plečnik’s work from within? What do perspectives from the outside – beyond the geographical borders of Slovenia – offer for our understanding of his work today? How do the readings of his work inform our engagement with the Ljubljana of today?   ________________________________   SPEAKERS   Georgia Butina Watson is a professor of Urban Design and Research and Practice Consultant in Planning and Urban Design at Oxford University UK. She co-authored a book and architectural exhibition: ‘Joze Plecnik- 1972-1957- Architecture and the City’ (1983, Oxford University, UK). She will present a talk titled Plečnik's Legacy in Ljubljana: Spatial Structure and the River Sequence Revisited. The talk will reflect on the seminal book she co-authored in 1983 titled Jože Plečnik, 1872-1957 : architecture and the city and present Plečnik's key urban projects in Ljubljana, using a variety of theoretical perspectives and lenses to discuss the lasting legacy of his work today. Of particular interest are the spatial/morphological structure of the city, the river sequences, the bridges and the market.   Axel Wlody is an architectural researcher graduated from the Master of Architecture program at ULB's La Cambre-Horta faculty with a thesis entitled Jože Plečnik and Ljubljana, identity and language of memory. He works at the Centre Pompidou Paris, on the inventory and valorization of a newly-discovered collection of Piano + Rogers Architects archival drawings relating to the centre's construction (1971-1977). He will present a talk titled Plečnik's Historiography, Exhibitions and Receptions. This research aims to propose a personal historiographical reading of Plecnik and his work as inscribed within a production of shifting narratives   Luka Skansi is an architectural historian, associate professor at Politecnico di Milano (DASTU – Dipartimento di Architettura e Studi Urbani). His research ranges across different geographical and temporal contexts of the 20th century, and focuses on the themes of spatiality in architecture, construction or its relationship with geopolitics. He will present a talk titled In Search of Plečnik's Legacy. He will take us on a short excursion through postwar architectural practice in Socialist Yugoslavia, finding continuities with Plečnik's spatial culture.   András Pálffy is an architect and founder of forward thinking practice Jabornegg & Pálffy. A long term professor at the Department of Design and Theory of Design at Vienna University of Technology. He was President of the Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession from 2007 to 2013. He will present a talk titled Jože Plečnik in Vienna, 1892-1912. This talk deals with the fundamental transformation of the metropolis on the Danube in the direction of an urban modernity that was essentially formed by social, functional and technological developments. Against this background of rapid urban transformation Jože Plečnik was responsible for the design of the Zacherlhaus and the Heilig-Geist Kirche, both important focal points of his professional work in Vienna.   Aljoša Dekleva is an architect and founder of the practice Dekleva Gregorič Architects. A professor at Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana. Since 2014 He runs an experimental teaching and research programme AA Nanotourism Visiting School at the AA. He will present the implications of five realised interventions of the last year's AA nanotourism Visiting School in the context of Plečnik, the Citiy of Ljubljana and Nanotourism   ________________________________   ABOUT NANOTOURISM   AA Nanotourism Visiting School is an architectural educational programme focusing on nanotourism - a creative critique of the current environmental, social and economic downsides of conventional tourism. Through critical thinking and close collaboration with local stakeholders, we focus on developing nanotourism case studies to reveal hidden aspects of the particular context addressing the place, its users, and locally available materials.   AA Nanotourism Visiting School was established in 2014 in collaboration with 24th biennial of design (BIO 50: 3, 2, 1… Test) and the Architectural Association, School of Architecture. Over the past decade, the AA Nanotourism program has produced numerous student projects that have gained recognition and been exhibited by prestigious institutions worldwide. These include the London Design Festival in 2018, the Oslo Architecture Triennale in 2019, the Vienna Design Week in 2020, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden in 2021, and the BIO27 Ljubljana in 2022. The programme is led by Aljoša Dekleva and Vid Žnidaršič.   Format: Short lectures, followed by a discussion. The symposium will be in English language.   ________________________________   " ["post_title"]=> string(69) "International Symposium: Plečnik and the City – Views from Outside" ["post_excerpt"]=> string(0) "" ["post_status"]=> string(7) "publish" ["comment_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["ping_status"]=> string(6) "closed" ["post_password"]=> string(0) "" ["post_name"]=> string(63) "international-symposium-plecnik-and-the-city-views-from-outside" ["to_ping"]=> string(0) "" ["pinged"]=> string(0) "" ["post_modified"]=> string(19) "2025-08-22 12:47:18" ["post_modified_gmt"]=> string(19) "2025-08-22 10:47:18" ["post_content_filtered"]=> string(0) "" ["post_parent"]=> int(0) ["guid"]=> string(44) "https://mao.si/?post_type=event&p=31890" ["menu_order"]=> int(0) ["post_type"]=> string(5) "event" ["post_mime_type"]=> string(0) "" ["comment_count"]=> string(1) "0" ["filter"]=> string(3) "raw" }
