When it was founded in 1972, the museum’s library collection consisted only of Plečnik’s library. The library has been significantly enriched by private book collections donated by individual architects, including Dušan Grabrijan, Jaroslav Foerster, Ivo Spinčič, Drago Umek, Jaroslav Černigoj, Pavel Göstl, Stanko Rohrman, as well as photographers Damjan Gale, Stojan Kerbler, and others. In addition, the library acquired books from the estates of architects such as Edvard Ravnikar, Vladimir Braco Mušič, Danilo Fürst, Niko Kralj, and Vladimira Bratuž Furlan. Today, the library holds approximately 13,000 monographs on architecture, design, and photography, and more than 5,200 items of specialized serial publications. Its archive of Slovenian and foreign magazines is particularly extensive. Since 1972, a part of the library’s work has been dedicated to documenting and keeping a record of articles relating to museum exhibition and other activities.

New exhibitions and inspirations are best shared over a good cup of coffee. Offering a unique experience of Slovenian architecture and design, café MAO is furnished with a range of celebrated Slovenian design donated to MAO specifically for this purpose by visitors and renowned Slovenian architects and designers. On warm days, the café space opens onto the museum courtyard, shaded by the pleasant canopy of the castle’s linden tree.
The MAO café is operated by the Secondary School of Gastronomy and Tourism Ljubljana.
