23rd Biennial of Design
27. 9.—11. 11. 2012
The Biennial of Design (known also by its Slovene acronym BIO) is one of the few major international design exhibitions that has a tradition of more than forty-eight years of presenting contemporary trends in international design. From the first biennial in 1964 to today, BIO has presented twenty-two exhibitions surveying the state of international design. BIO includes selection of well-designed works with emphasis on quality, originality, and innovation and presents current trends in contemporary design.
The Museum for Architecture and Design (MAO) received 437 submissions from record number of 38 countries to the international call for entries to 23rd Biennial of Design exhibition. For this year’s biennial MAO has selected Margo Konings and Margriet Vollenberg of the Organisation in design studio to be curators of BIO 23. The works from 27 countries have been chosen for the exhibition based on the theme Design Relations, on curator’s expertise in contemporary design and their experienced eye for good design. Selected works for the BIO 23 exhibition show an impulse of how designers and the works they create are influenced by modern technologies, digitalisation and globalisation and how contemporary designers embrace the resourcefulness of nature and its processes. Throughout the history of BIO, industrial design has always been a primary focus. Today this area of design remains highly important in the wider discipline that is design; therefore a special section of the BIO 23 exhibition is dedicated to products selected within the field of industrial design.
The works selected for the BIO 23 exhibition are divided into four main categories: Technology, Digitalisation, Globalisation and Products. The first three categories are subdivided into several subcategories. Under Technology are Health, Machines and Processes, and Science; under Digitalisation are Back to Crafts, Counter Reaction, Data Processing, Graphic; and under Globalisation are the subcategories Industry Leftovers, Social Local, Urban Environment, Smart Solutions.
The international jury Giulio Cappellini, Sven Jonke, Sophie Lovell, Jimmy MacDonald and Vasa J. Perović awarded to the best design works exhibited at the opening of the exhibition. The winner of the BIO Gold Medal supported by company Petrol received a monetary prize in the amount of 5,000 €.
The international exhibition of contemporary design is accompanied by the guided tours, creative workshops for children, screenings, lectures, conference, presentations of products and other exhibitions and events around the city of Ljubljana.
