ICAM 18, the 2016 biennial conference of the International Confederation of Architectural Museums, an organization with more than 140 members worldwide, will be organized by Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO). This will be the first ICAM conference to take place in Slovenia and will run under the title Architectural Institutions at the Crossroads.
During the conference, several panel sessions will be held to discuss the fundamental questions architectural museums and archives face today. In the session Rethinking Collections and Archives chaired by Aric Chen, curator and writer, formerly the creative director of Beijing Design Week and now curator of design and architecture for M+, the soon to be built museum for visual culture in Hong Kong, the discussion will focus on new relations and approaches to collecting materials and how has the onset of digitalisation and digital design changed these concepts. Andres Lepik, director of the Architekturmuseum TU Munich, will chair the session titled Architecture Museums and Research focusing on research and its position in architectural museums, while Architecture Museums and Events session chaired by MAO curator Maja Vardjan, will focus on the meaning of biennial events and festivals in comparison to museum exhibitions. National Museum of the 21st Century Arts (Maxxi) senior curator and professor at University of Camerino Pippo Ciorra will chair the session Crisis and Clashes, where the changes to audiences, their consumption and the impact of both on museums’ policies will be discussed. The session The History of the City versus The Architecture Institution of the Future chaired by Kent Martinussen, head of the Danish Architecture Centre (DAC), will explore the role architectural institutions play in the shaping of our built environment and urban development.
MAO has been a member of ICAM since the organisation was established in 1979 and was chosen as the host of this year’s conference at ICAM17 in Montreal. This will be the first ICAM conference to take place in Slovenia and is under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia Mr. Borut Pahor.
The first session taking place on 30 May at Museum of Architecture and Design will be open to the general public. Attendance by application only! Apply to info(at)mao.si.
