9. 11. 2016
MAO will host an exhibition and debate organized within the international project European Design Stories with designers from three European countries: Michaela Tomišková (Czech Republic), Marco Zavagno (Italy), Michal Bačák (Czech Republic), Gaja Mežnarič Osole (Slovenia) and Tjaša Bavcon and Jasminka Ferček (Slovenia). They will share their views on the approach to design in their countries’ environments as well as in Europe in general.
Dechem is a leading Czech product design studio with a special attention to glass. Its works excel with unusual poetry, simple forms and delicated craft. One of its founders, Michaela Tomišková, will tell us Dechem’s personal stories behind its sophisticated glass products.
Multidisciplinary creative studio Zaven is based in Venice, Italy. One of its members, Marco Zavagno, will talk, among other, about how is living and working in Venice as well as dividing his efforts between product and graphic design.
Michal Bačák originally studied product design, but now he is a sought-after Czech illustrator cooperating with many design studios and creative projects. He will reveal his inspirations in various fields of science as well as everyday life.
Gaja Mežnarič Osole is a Slovenian designer and part of the Re-generacija collective that connects design practices with the current economic, social and environmental issues. She will present The Friendly Enemy project and changed relations in the field of design in Slovenia.
Tjaša Bavcon and Jasminka Ferček are part of the Oloop collective that emphasizes the importance of hand-made products in projects of collective creation as well as in projects involving revival of traditional crafts. They will talk about the projects that include collective rituals of knitting and textile design and connections between past and present.
After the debate, the European Design Stories exhibition with videos of the projects will be on view in the castle’s chapel (to 23 November 2016).

The debate and exhibition are part of the European Design Stories, an international curatorial project documenting stories in works by selected original creators. Those stories are collectors of intimate moments in creative processes, ways of thinking, in working and living environments that best capture the narratives of final products. They do not limit to any particular design field, no matter if it is an individual designer, studio, brand or craftsman. They seek various approaches in contemporary design that respond to current issues in particular countries or in the society in general nowadays. Their aim is to present design as a remarkable dynamic mover and an instrument, which enhances our lives.
The project team made journeys across various European countries and collected authentic material and insights in form of photographs, texts and videos. Apart from the online platform, they organize exhibitions, screenings, lectures and prints to reflect current background of the design scene of the old continent.
