BIO 26: Designathon #1

17. 5.—19. 5. 2019

From May 17th do 19th over 100 creatives from 17 countries took part at the Designathon #1, combining the creative, entrepreneurial world of start-ups, tweaking it with a curatorial approach, thus starting the production process of BIO 26.

Six international, multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with six institutions, six Slovene mentors – Knowledge mentors and six international mentors – Design Mentors put their minds and hearts together to solve a design challenge. The aim of the collaborations is to open up the networks, creating projects and structures that could develop through time.

This year’s edition of the 26th biennial of design – BIO 26 is curated by the Austrian curator and cultural producer Thomas Geisler and co-curated by Austrian curator, designer and journalist Aline Lara Rezende. The jury and BIO 26 advisory committee consists of Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum London, Johnny Golding, Philosopher and professor at the Royal College of Art, Amelie Klein, Curator, Vitra Design Museum, Germany, Maja Vardjan, Curator, MAO and Aleš Pustovrh, Professor and economist.

The participants were thrilled about the event and the creative atmosphere and it will not be an easy task for the jury to choose only six projects that will be further developed (from prototype to product) at the Designathon #2: taking place from the 12th to 14th of July 2019 in Ljubljana

The theme of BIO 26: Common Knowledge is one of the greatest challenges in our society: information – how we manage it, shape it, process it and distribute it.

FROM THE EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT:

The first designathon of BIO 26 will be taking place from the 17th of May to the 19th of May 2019 in Klub CD (Cankarjev dom) in Ljubljana. The six best projects selected during the first designathon—ideation to prototype—will continue to the next phase and receive funds to be developed further in a second designathon—prototype to product—taking place in July in Ljubljana.

BIO 26 challenges the existing formats of design events. Combining the creative, entrepreneurial world of start-ups, tweaking it with a curatorial approach, the BIO 26 team is crafting two design marathons – designations, in which six international, multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with six institutions, six Slovene mentors – Knowledge mentors and six international mentors – Design Mentors will be putting their minds and hearts together to solve a design challenge. The aim of the collaborations is to open up the networks, creating projects and structures that could develop through time.
