Silent Revolutions at Moscow Design Week 2013

11. 10.—17. 10. 2013

The exhibition Silent Revolutions will be on show at Moscow Design Week, from 11 to 17 October 2013. The presentation in Moscow is already the seventh event in this series of international presentations of Slovenian design and companies behind it, which understand design as an integral component in both development and competitiveness. To date, the exhibition has been widely seen at London Design Festival, Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, at Belgrade Design Week in Serbia, Helsinki Design Week in Finland, and in Designforum Wien in Austria. For the Moscow version the exhibition has been expanded and enhanced with ten new design products.

The exhibition Silent Revolutions presents a selection of design production spanning more than two decades of this young European country. The title of the project – Silent Revolutions – alludes to a country with an exceptional design history, but which has not (yet) established itself as an influential design force in the wider international context. The ‘silence’ implied in the story was a key motivator behind the concept of the exhibition, where a broad array of recent designs is set in a dialogue with five historical, iconic design objects. The other component – the idea of a ‘revolution’ – suggests that some of the products presented set new, unparalleled standards worldwide with the groundbreaking innovations they boldly put forward.

The exhibition focuses not only on the excellence of individual products but also on their position in the broader context of contemporary Slovenian design. The selection highlights products of both big industries as well as special limited edition objects produced by the designers themselves.

The exhibition, which highlights the specificity, vitality and heterogeneity of contemporary design in Slovenia, has been expanded and enhanced with new design products, including the P. A. T. H. house, developed by the famous designer Philippe Starck in cooperation with the Slovenian company Riko. At the lecture organised as part of the exhibition Silent Revolutions at Moscow Design Week 2013, Starck will present his creative genius and his consistently interweaving ethics and aesthetics. He will also speak about his committment to sustainable contemporary design that is responsible to the environment and users. These are the principles that guided him in designing the new prefabricated and technologically advanced P. A. T. H. house.

On the sidelines of the 10th session of the intergovernmental Slovenian-Russian Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technological Co-operation, which will be held in Moscow on 15 and 16 October, the exhibition Silent Revolutions will also be visited by Slovenian Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec.

Under the auspices of the SPIRIT Slovenia public agency, the Moscow Design Week 2013 and presentation of Slovenian contemporary design will also be visited by 40 representatives of Slovenian companies who will attend the Slovenian-Russian Business and Investment Forum on 17 October and visit the Dom Expo 2013 fair, where Slovenia is represented through the investment projects of particular Slovenian companies.

The Silent Revolutions project is the result of fruitful cooperation between the Museum of Architecture and Design, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of Slovenia in Moscow, the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, SPIRIT Slovenia, and the Government Communication Office, which headed and coordinated the project.
