Open Call Forbidden Vernaculars: Building With Earth Workshop

16. 05. 2022

As part of the 27th Biennial of Design BIO27 – Supervernaculars, production space Krater in collaboration with Atelier Luma (FR) and BC Materials (BE) is organizing a hands-on workshop on the topic of building with earth. In the period of one week 10 international individuals will be selected through an open call to participate in building a tea-pavilion and learn about the regenerative design practices in an abandoned construction pit in the center of Ljubljana.

The building event will include several workshops and talks with a special attention on two different techniques of building with earth: rammed earth (gravel + clay) and building with cob (fibers + clay). All materials will be sourced from the pit itself, showcasing the use of local materials in architecture and design. Participants will get practical experience on how to prepare and treat the materials to build simple structures. With the mentorship of the appraised Atelier Luma, BC Materials and local Krater team, they will get an opportunity to get first-hand insight in contemporary material development and sustainable innovation.

The workshop is suited for all interested creatives, architects, designers and builders who want to get a direct experience of building with earth and share their own insights and know-how. The residents of bordering countries of Austria, Italy, Hungary and Croatia are especially welcomed to apply, since this will broaden the specter of local materials found in Slovenia.

Application deadline is 5 June.
